Rent Assessment

Local authorities charge rent based on the income of a tenant. The rent amount may be reviewed during tenancy.

Rents in all houses properties in County Carlow are based on the Differential Rent Scheme which was last reviewed in 2016. Rents are calculated on the basis of household income in accordance with the scheme. The following income is assessed as part of the rent calculation: -

  • Net weekly income
  • Income from self-employment
  • Income from social welfare payments
  • Back to work allowance 
  • Maintenance payments
  • Payments from other Government Departments/Agencies
  • Rental income from property or land
  • Income from pensions
  • Income from saving, deposits and investments 
  • Any other sources of income not mentioned above

The following will be disregarded: -

  • Child benefit
  • Carers allowance
  • Blind persons allowance
  • Domiciliary allowance
  • Foster Care/Guardian Allowance 
  • Fuel allowance
  • Living alone allowance
  • Over 80’s allowance
  • Training allowance in Government supported back to work scheme
  • Scholarships/Internships
  • Higher education grants
  • Lump sums
  • Shift allowance/overtime
