General Dog Licence

You must hold a valid licence if you manage a dog kennel with 20 or more dogs. You can apply to the local authority for an annual licence.

Do you have a dog? If so, you need a licence - under the Control of Dogs Act 1986, as amended all dog owners are required to have a dog licence. All revenue generated from dog licences goes towards funding the Dog Warden Service and the Dog Shelter in Paulstown.

Types of Dog Licences and Costs

A Single Dog Licence costs €20 per year.

A Lifetime of Dog Licence costs €140 for the duration of an individual dog’s life.

A General Dog Licence costs €400 per year. It is for an unspecified number of dogs but for a specific address. This is suitable for those who have more than 20 dogs (i.e. Hunts clubs, greyhounds etc.

Licences are not needed for:

  • Guide dogs for blind people
  • Dogs in the possession of a local authority
  • Dogs in the possession of the ISPCA or Gardaí
  • Any dog imported into the State for less than 30 days

How to Buy or Renew Your dog licence at Licence.ie

Single and Lifetime dog licences may be purchased from Licences.ie or from your local post office. For online purchases you will be asked to set up an account with Licences.ie if you don't already have one, and you will need an email address as part of the registration process. Your licence should issue to you by post within 10 working days.

General Dog Licences

General Dog Licences are suitable for those who have more than 20 dogs i.e. Hunt clubs or greyhound trainers. These general licences may be purchased from The Environment Section, Carlow County Council.
