1916 COMMEMORATION
FR.ALBERT BIBBY OFM CAPUCHIN PRIEST
Thomas Francis Bibby was born in Regent Street, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow in 1877. The Bibby family moved to Kilkenny in the late 1890s.Thomas attended the formation Noviciate, for young students aspiring to join the Capuchin Order, in Kilkenny first, and then the Noviciate in Cork in 1894 where he took the religious name of Albert. He was ordained a priest in Dublin in 1902. As a priest he became well known for his ministry, especially among amongst the poor, the lowly and the children. During the week of the 1916 Rebellion he was very active in attending to all in need and at the execution of the leaders of the Rising he was constantly present in Kilmainham Jail along with his colleagues ministering at all hours night and day. In the aftermath of the Rebellion and the executions he was in constant contact with the families of all in need and of the bereaved, along with ministering to all in the Civil War. Exiled to the USA in 1924 he died there in 1925 but was repatriated back to Ireland in 1958.
